Everyone loves emojis. They help express feelings and add context to text conversations. Chromebooks feature built-in support for typing emoticons. Here's how to get emojis on a Chromebook using the emoji keyboard for Chrome OS.
Information in this article applies to all Chrome OS devices regardless of the manufacturer (Acer, Dell, Google, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Toshiba, etc.).
How to Use Emojis on Chromebook
To use the emoji keyboard on Chromebook, you must first enable input options on the Chrome OS shelf:
Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
If you don't see the Chrome OS shelf, tap or click in the bottom-right corner of the screen to bring it up.
Select the Settings gear in the pop-up window to open your Chromebook Settings.
Scroll down to the bottom of the settings page and select Advanced.
Scroll down the page again and select Languages and Input.
Again, scroll down the page and select the toggle switch next to Show input options on the shelf to enable it.
Close the settings and select US in the shelf to bring up the input options.
If your keyboard layout is set to a language other than U.S. English, the input options icon will show different letters.
Select the smiley icon to bring up the emoji keyboard.
You can now choose from hundreds of built-in emoticons. Tap or click the symbols in the bottom row to browse the different categories, then select the keyboard icon in the bottom-right corner to minimize the emoji keyboard when you're done.
Leave the emoji keyboard open when using chat applications like WhatsApp so that you have easy access to emoticons.
How to Use the On-Screen Chromebook Keyboard
You can also use the on-screen keyboard to access emojis on Chromebook:
Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
Select the Settings gear in the pop-up window to open your Chromebook settings.
Scroll down to the bottom of the settings page and select Advanced.
Scroll down and select Manage accessibility features under Accessibility.
Scroll down to the Keyboard and text input section and select the toggle switch next to Enable on-screen keyboard.
Close the settings and select the keyboard icon in the shelf to bring up the keyboard.
Select the smiley icon in the bottom row to switch to the emoji keyboard.
You can also download the Chrome emoji keyboard as a Chrome extension. The web-based version includes even more emoticons and a search feature that makes it easier to find the right one for the emotion you want to convey.

Users can put an Emoji on a Chromebook easily. You can even type emoji without On-Screen Keyboard. I have shared a quick trick to enable all type of emoji from your Chromebook. Users can send smile, sad, hug, cry or any type of emotion using emoji.
I use Emoji's a lot. The frequency of me using Emoji while texting someone will be like, at least one emoji in a text and in some cases at least one per two to three text messages. We actually convey what we feel by sending an Emoji. It also makes texting short. For example, if you want to say "I am angry at you", you might just use these 😒 😡. These two emoji can just explain a lot of things to the one reading.
How to Type an Emoji in Chromebook – Send Any Emoji
Well, this is what the whole article is about right? Okay, in this article I am going to share two different ways by which you can use emoji. You can follow either of these methods:
- Using an On-Screen Keyboard.
- Put an Emoji on a Chromebook from the shelf.
Put an Emoji on a Chromebook using an On-Screen Keyboard
If your Chromebook is a Laptop, you must go to settings and enable the On-Screen Keyboard. Also, if your Chromebook can also be used as a Tablet, you need not enable the On-Screen keyboard from settings, it will pop out by itself when you flip the screen.
Enable the On-Screen keyboard on your Chromebook.
- Click on Time or your Avatar >Settings >Advanced >Accessibility >Manage Accessibility Features.
- Select Keyboard and text Input.
- Click on Enable on-screen keyboard.
Once you are done enabling On-Screen Keyboard on your Chromebook, it is now very easy to type an emoji on a Chromebook.
- Open the On-Screen Keyboard.
- Click on the Emoji icon in the On-Screen Keyboard.
- Select the emoji you want to type and send.
You can now find that the Emoji has been inserted. This is the easiest and also officially recommended way to put an emoji on a Chromebook.
Put an Emoji on a Chromebook from the shelf
This step is quite different from the first step. In short, you are going to access Emoji by clicking on the input options icon at the bottom. I feel its always easy to pick up an Emoji in that tiny box from there rather than go through whole process of adding Emoji from the On-Screen Keyboard.
- Click on Time >Settings >Advanced >locate Languages and Input.
- Now Enable Show input options.
You can find that an extra option appears beside the Time or Avatar. Basically a Country's name in short form. It shows "US" for the United States, "GB" for Great Britain, etc. - Click on the option resembling your country name in a short form in the shelf.
- Now, click on the smiley icon >choose the Emoji.
Conclusion
That's it, you get to put an Emoji on a Chromebook anytime while you write anything with ease. I hope you have learned how to put an Emoji on a Chromebook. You can also try installing some extensions or so, but I do not recommend that. Why install a third-party software while your operating system itself provides you the feature.

Emoji first became popular on smartphones, but they're just as necessary on computers. Chromebooks and Chrome OS tablets have built-in emoji as well. We'll show you where to find them, and how to use emoji on your device.
People might not use emoji as much when typing on a laptop as they would on a smartphone. Still, Windows and Mac include emoji support, and Chromebooks do as well. They're easy to access whenever you need that little extra touch that only an emoji can provide.
Chromebooks come in form factors with physical keyboards and touchscreen-only tablets. We'll start with the traditional keyboard and mouse.
First, your cursor needs to be in a text box. When you're ready to add an emoji, right-click in the text box.
This will bring up a pop-up menu. Click the "Emoji" option.
The Chrome OS virtual keyboard will appear full-size across the bottom of the screen…
Full-size virtual keyboard.
…or in a floating window.
Floating virtual keyboard.
The different emoji categories are listed at the bottom of the keyboard. Find the emoji you want to use, then click it to add the icon to the text box.
On a touchscreen Chromebook without a physical keyboard, the process is even more simple. Begin typing in a text box to bring up the virtual keyboard.
Next, tap the "Emoji" button on the virtual keyboard.
Full-size virtual keyboard.
As with Chrome OS devices with a physical keyboard, the virtual keyboard might appear as a floating window instead of a full-size keyboard.
Floating virtual keyboard.
Selecting the button will bring up the same emoji menu as before. Select the emoji you want to use. Recently-used emoji will always show up first when you open the menu.

Ah, Emoji: the ubiquitous communication that bridges the digital age with our caveman, wall-etching history. As a form of communication, they have risen to the level of having their own (reportedly terrible) feature film and are used in a variety of ways by a variety of people on a variety of devices.
Well, except Chromebooks.
Since the inception of Chrome OS, Emojis just haven't been a very important mark on the development timeline. From a productivity standpoint, I'm unsure how many people actually are concerned with their absence thus far. As Android is finding its roots in the OS, however, Emoji are simply part of the overall experience users have come to expect.
I get it. I'm not a big Emoji user, but I see the appeal. I honestly end up having to remind myself to use them from time to time just to feel young and cool. My daughter loves them, so that helps.
–> And it is her use case that really makes me feel like this is a decent win for Chrome OS in general. Younger folks love some Emoji. My daughter uses them in messages to me frequently. Because of this, and because of Android's place in Chrome OS, Emoji aren't just a fun addition: they are a necessity. –>
Go with me, here. Where are Chromebooks most prevalent? You guessed it: schools. And who uses Emojis more than anyone else? School-aged kids.
–> Second, now that Android is a selling point for Chromebooks, you have to deliver on all the things that users expect in their apps. Emoji use is one of those things they expect, and Chrome OS is finally coming around on it.
How To Get It
–> For right now this is behind a flag and only in the Developer Channel. Usual caveats apply, here. I'll put it this way: if you don't know how to get to the Developer Channel, this is something you should just wait to come to the Stable Channel. If you do make it to the Developer Channel, know that it is buggy and unstable. Also, know that you'll lose your locally stored data upon your return to the Stable Channel.
Now that we have that out of the way, the process for getting the Emoji context menu up and running is quite simple. Just type this into your omnibar: chrome://flags/#enable-emoji-context-menu and enable it. After a quick restart of Chrome, you can now use Emoji.
Even though this brings up the virtual keyboard, it does, in fact, work with or without a keyboard attached. I did find that navigating the Emoji menu with the mouse pointer causes some issue here and there. Two-finger scroll doesn't really work, so you have to click and drag. After you drag the Emoji, the pointer gets stuck until you click outside of the Emoji list.
Using the touch screen works way better and I'd assume they'll iron this stuff out before we see it in the Stable Channel. For those of you living life on the edge in the Developer channel, welcome to your new Emoji!
